Our adventure at Buster Hollow began when my husband, an old “city boy”, decided to surprise me, an old “farm gal”, by trading in his familiar city life for my life long dream of returning to country living. We purchased our acreage in the beautiful Qu’Appelle Valley in 2003 and later named our home in honour of a much loved orange tabby cat named “Buster”, who once graced our acreage with his presence and fancied himself an ambassador to all living creatures.
Having always loved animals, we wanted to add some friendly barnyard critters to our home. I liked sheep and was captivated by the shepherding stories that my brother would tell. He raised large commercial sheep, but since we live on an acreage we decided to find a smaller breed of sheep and went to investigate Babydoll Southdowns. We immediately fell in love with their sweet fuzzy smiling faces and that was it! In 2005 we bought two unrelated adult breeding pairs and were very excited to have four lambs born on exactly the same day in the spring of 2006. Our flock had literally doubled overnight!
In 2007 we also started growing beautiful gourds, pumpkins and squash to market locally. The sheep help us with some of the weeding and by supplying the fertilizer to make things grow.
